An update from Selvin HQ

A warm hello to all of our friends in our first newsletter of 2012!

2012 is very much a year of firsts and milestones for the Selvin and Friends Foundation and we are thrilled that we are able to share them with you.

Selvin turns 1!
March saw us reach a pretty big milestone when we celebrated our first birthday! When we look back at our first year, from the hundreds of miles we have run, to not only reaching our £1000 fundraising target, but nearly tripling it, we are hugely proud of what we have been able to achieve.

More importantly, we couldn’t have done any of this without the support for our friends and family so a huge THANK YOU from us to you.

Selvin’s Super Sunday
We marked our first birthday by holding two fundraising events on Sunday 25th March, aptly titled ‘Selvin’s Super Sunday.’

Vicki headed to Lisbon to take part in the Half Marathon along with 29,999 other runners. As you can imagine, it was a bit of a free for all trying to get over the start line! Scorching hot weather and injuries made the run a little more difficult than the cold and drizzly weather we usually have here in England but Vicki managed to complete the run and made a photo diary of the event which can be seen on our blog at www.selvin.org.uk.

We were hugely honored to have five amazing girls take part in our first Selvin Swimathon at Flitwick Leisure centre. The girls set themselves the challenge of completing as many lengths as possible in an hour and completed a staggering 109 lengths. What an incredible achievement! A wonderful crowd of family and friends, who also held a cake sale to raise funds for Selvin, cheered the girls on.

Huge thanks to Aimee Titheradge, Anya Corvesor, Emma Larner, Kathleen Renwick and Molly Gough whose amazing efforts raised £450! Also a huge thank you to Ali and Pat Conway for all of their hard work and determination in making this event happen, it really is beyond appreciated!

From Schools, For Schools!

At the end of last year we decided that 2012 would be the year we launched our ‘From Schools, For Schools’ campaign where we hoped to attract schools in the UK to support and raise money for their peers in Central America.
After the many hours Stu spent making a video presentation for the schools, we were delighted to hear that Parkfields Middle School were prepared to support us by naming us as their charity for the January – April term (we must say a huge thank you at this point to Parkfields teacher Claire MacGregor, our contact at the school and Stu’s in-law!).

Over the 14 weeks that Selvin was supported at Parkfields the pupils found new and exciting ways to raise funds, alongside some tried and tested methods of fundraising. Backed by a supporting faculty, the pupils demonstrated their enthusiasm for our project in astronomical measures.

A taster of the events that have taken place at the school include; non uniform days, pancake sales, cake sales, sponsored music events, sponsored silence events (with pupils only interacting via a whiteboard all day) and movie evenings.
During a movie evening, one of the final events that took place last term, Stu took great pride in passing on our thanks to over 90 pupils from years 5 and 6 who had made, not just that event, but the whole campaign a big success.

In fact, the pupils of Parkfields demonstrated such amazing dedication to Selvin’s cause; the swimathon was actually completed by pupils from Parkfields! It was fantastic to know that they were not only keen to support us during school time but were prepared to go that extra mile and support us in their own time.
As a result of the hard work put in by everyone at Parkfields, they have raised an amazing £1641!

We really are delighted by Parkfields extraordinary efforts and everybody, from the staff to every single pupil, can be extremely proud of their achievements.

Dates for Your Selvin Diary

1. 21st – 31st July – Guatemala Visit
The flights have been booked! We are officially heading to Guatemala in July to deliver much needed school equipment.
During our time in Central America we will be spending a day at each of the schools in San Andrés Itzapa and Santa María de Jesús delivering the school equipment that they have told us they need the most. We will also spend two days taking on a 48-hour fundraising trek, climbing over two active volcanoes! We will be taking a huge number of photo’s to share our experience with you and hope to have a photo and video gallery up on the website later this year showing you the real difference your donations can make.
We feel it is important to say that every part of our trip, from flights and accommodation to the day-to-day costs have been paid for personally.100% of our funds are used to buy school materials only.

2. 26th – 27th July – Volcano Challenge
Stu and Vicki, along with some friends of Selvin, will attempt to climb two of the volcanoes that surround the town of Antigua, which are closely located to the two schools we will be visiting.

3. 22nd September - The London Triathlon
Vicki will be taking on another challenge as she attempts to run, cycle and swim her way to the finish line.

Don’t stop me now!
We want to say one more huge thank you to all of our friends and family who have so generously supported us. We have currently raised a whopping £4964.05, which will make such a massive difference to the schools we are supporting.
